Academic Advisors

Academic Advisors offer academic guidance to students. They see new students who want to register with Adult Ed and determine which students are eligible for tuition-free status.  They help students figure out which courses they still need to take to complete graduation requirements.  They provide information about the different graduation programs available and help determine which one is most suitable for each student.  They meet with students to develop and update their graduation plans.  They can also help prepare students for application to post-secondary institutions by providing information about which courses to take for admissions, when to apply, how to order transcripts, etc.

Frequently asked questions:

1.  Why do I need to see an Academic Advisor?

An Advisor will determine your eligibility to attend Adult Ed and your fee status.  They will collect all the necessary documents and develop a graduation plan with you, if necessary.

2.  What documents do I need to bring?

You need to bring photo id, proof of your citizenship or permanent residence status in Canada, and your most recent Ministry of Education transcript.  If you do not have a transcript, bring your school records for grades 10 through 12, if possible.

3.  When do I need to see an Advisor?

If you haven’t graduated from high school, you must see an Advisor to create a graduation plan.  If you want to register for an Academic Guided Studies course (self-paced) you also need to see an Advisor first.

4. Do I need to have an assessment?

If you have only completed Transitional English classes, or you have never completed an academic English course, we may ask you to have an English assessment.  You may also need a Math assessment if you have not completed an academic Math course or if it has been a very long time since you have studied Math.

5.  I’ve just turned 19.  Do I have to start paying tuition fees?

It depends on when your 19th birthday is.  If you turn 19 during the current school year (after July 1st), and you have already graduated, you do not start paying fees until the following July 1st.  If you turn 19 but have not yet graduated, then you are still tuition-free until you graduate.
